She couldn’t make out his face. Inside the train, Julia was dreaming, and in her dream, he was kissing her body.

She was seated in a chair while he stood behind her in the middle of the night, undoing the clasp that bound her hair, brushing the strands across her bare shoulders. Her hair, soft as early morning dew, slid down her arms and over her breasts. With brush in hand, he leaned over and kissed one.

The warm sensation made her giddy, the heat of his breath sending pleasurable chills through her skin. His moaning mingled with the moonlight and the hot, gentle breeze that stirred the bedroom curtains.

Who was he?

She strained to see his face, to see who could move her to such depths.

He was tempting. He was forbidden. He was lost and so was she.

“I think I smell smoke,” she whispered in her dream as he lifted her, then laid her on a carpet of silk.

“It’s the fireplace, my love,” he whispered back.

“The horses…they’re restless…I can hear them stomping outside.”

“It’s only the wind lifting the leaves.”

His voice was low and familiar. Was it Brandon?

She sighed. It felt so good to be with him again.

When he straightened above her, she saw he was naked, too. Shadows concealed his face, and no matter how hard she stared, she couldn’t be certain who he was. Moonlight glistened along the muscles of his chest. Lowering his head, he kissed her shoulder, trailing his lips along her underarm, her elbow, her fingers.

Lifting herself up on her forearms, she struggled to see his face. A glimpse of his cheek reminded her of Holt.

Was it Holt making love to her?

Leaning back against the silken carpet, she allowed his lips to linger where they would. He chose her ankle, the inside of her calf, the top of her knee, then upward.

He surprised her by kissing her soft abdomen, then traveling up the line between her breasts. When his lips found hers, she knew with shocking clarity it was Ryan.

With a loud exclamation, she woke up. Disconnected, she was clutching the pillow on Ryan’s narrow cot.

“Julia, what’s wrong?” Clarissa was standing above her, nudging her. “Your voice was filled with panic. What were you dreaming about?”
